I have the E8400 and its a fantastic chip for the money, overclocks well too. The trouble with a post like this is some people will prefer one chip over another for their specific needs and budget.

Very few games max out a dual core cpu these days, but some games will max out a video card very easily.

either chip you choose will serve you well, but if you're a gamer is worth making sure your video card is not going to be bottle necked by your CPU.

Well, the e8400 is priced $170.
If you want to go budget, the Phenom II X3 720 is the best choice as to price, cores, speed and overclockability.
If the budget is tight, the PII 545 is a good choice.
Then, if you are willing to pay $170 for a CPU, the Phenom II 945 is a great choice and, for the same money as the e8400, you get a QUAD core with respectable speeds and very good performance. Plus, in the future, newer games would run faster on the quad 945 than on the dual e8400.

Although the e7500 is probably faster, getting the Athlon 250 means that you'll be getting an AM3 mobo. Since AMD will continue to make CPU's for AM3, it is more future proof and there is a high chance that you'll be able to upgrade to anything AMD has to offer in 2-3 years. The athlon 250 is also cheaper so that's definitely worth considering.
