AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 GHz!!! Well! It arrived!!! Along with a new board, M4N78, and memory @ 4GB DDR2 800. I put it all together and? Bit of a letdown really. It barely performs little better than my old AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3 GHz. Currently running bios version 08.00.15 04/08/09 on the M4N78. The Phenom is listed in Bios, so I take it that all is well in that department? if so, sorry that I wasted the money upgrading.

Barely performs better at what? Your new cpu is alot faster than the 6000. The new system is much faster than anything that is cpu intensive . You will not notice a difference in browsing the web and office work.

Having recently built a machine with a 955 BE, I'd say its head and shoulders above an old 6000+. Besides that fact that it easily clocks up to 3.7ghz, it can perform more work and do it faster. In fact, it rivals the QX9650 that I have in a different computer, perhaps even beating the QX9650. If there is a letdown with this chip, its only because you aren't working it hard enough to let it show its stuff.

I upgraded to the 955 from a Intel core 2 duo e6300 @ 2ghz and i see a huge increase in performance. My whole system specs are in my profile info i think, if you want to check them out.

Using what program? Even a program which only uses two cores should see some difference, but if you can encode with 4 cores it will be much faster indeed. Windows DVD Maker only uses 2 cores, in case that's what you're using.

to be honest random i just tried encoding again and did notice a difference. it took just over 5 minutes to encode a 700mb avi file to DVD using convertx2DVD V.3.0. yesterday it took much longer to convert a file of the same size.

You should notice a HUGE difference, especially in multitasking and multi threaded applications.

Have you done an OS reinstall? I always like to do one of those when I get significant new hardware.

You've got a blazing fast processor and after some time and tweaking I don't think you'll be disappointed with it.

Good luck!

old time for encoding a 700mb avi file could be anything from 15 to 26 minutes. it took around 15 minutes yesterday for the 700mb file conversion. just done another encoding of 700mb avi to DVD and this time took around 10 minutes. there is defintely improvement.

i did reinstall XP media center edition on putting my new system together. forget to mention it is a new HDD too.
