My HP Compaq desk top stopped recognizing my cd and dvd drives. I tried to run repair using my XP Professional with service pack 3. During the repair install I receive the following message:

Files Needed

The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy files from:
GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROMO\I386

Using the explore feature on my laptop the disk has this file but I can not get it to copy.

I don't want to lose all of my files with a fresh install.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

Tto emulate the CD it's asking for, you could slipstream your laptop's system with an installation of XP SP3 using the tutorial Paul Thurrot publishes at his Supersite for Windows - http://www.winsupersite.com/
