Hello, first off, thank you for your time. I recently purchased a WD Smartware external hard drive for backup purposes. Today I did a complete restore and then defragged my PC's hard drive. When I re-booted I got a notification from WD saying that an software update was available for my external hard drive. I told it to proceed and it installed the update and then told me to re-boot. After the re-boot the external hard drive was completely empty. None of the files that I backed-up from my PC were there and I have already deleted them from my PC and defragged....any chance of recovery?

Thanks!

I forgot to add....the WD external drive no longer shows up. And when I try to open the software I get a Windows pop-up saying that "WD Smartware has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Thanks again...

It was a virus which ask you to reboot your system, software update was available for your external hard drive. There is no software is applied for external drives, so next time don't do these things.
Now for your data try Kernel for FAT and NTFS, hard disk data recovery software for the purpose of recovering your data from that drive. For more details check Kernel hard disk data recovery software.

I highly recommend that you use some hard drive data recovery software, here's some good one
WD hard drive data recovery
file recovery software

You'd better do file recovery as soon as possible to prevent files lost forever.

You’d better create a new thread to ask your own question next time.
As to your external hard drive data, you may need some data recovery tool to help you.
Here is a video tutorial that will teach you to do that step by step:

Never try to save all important drive data on only one drive again.
