I have a Socket 478 P4 Motherboard with a intel 850 chipset.
the board is an ASUS P4T-E. I have an intel 1700MHZ, 400MHZ Bus, 256K OEM Chip in it now. What can I put in this board?

Looks like you can put a 2.6ghz P4 in there, or a Xeon around the same speed. This platform is very obsolete, I would not spend anything to upgrade it when you can get a new board and CPU from a place like Frys or Microcenter for under $100.

I agree with festerovic, plus the P4 are not efficient, it will serve you better to change your mobo and cpu at once.
What's your budget?
