All SATA drives and ports will auto-negotiate the fastest speed supported by both the drive and the port, so you can plug a SATA drive of any speed into a SATA port of any speed. The connection will run at the speed of the slowest device.

Occasionally you may find a particular drive and a particular port don't auto-negotiate properly. If you have any problems getting the drive to work, look for a jumper pin on the drive that forces it to use the slower speed. Setting that jumper will bypass the negotiation process and force the drive to work with a slower port if it's unable to negotiate the speed automatically.
