I have an asrock A780gxe/128m. I have had it for a while with 2 4850 512mb in xfire, and now I upgraded to a single 5850. catalyst is telling me that my pcie is x8 even though I flipped the card to x16 mode. What should I do?

Well you can use Cpu-z to compare what they say regarding if your using pci-2.0 @16 on 16 channels.
Also you can revert to one of the 4850's to compare that result. I guess you tried the other slot and got the same result. Sometimes there is a bios adjustment which defines the Peg connection level as well. It may have auto set in bios when the 2 cards were installed but requires a manual entry by you to revert back. I would have thought it was a power issue but no way as it uses less than a 4850.
What are your plans for the measly 4850's ?

Ok, i put a 4850 in and it gave me x16 so I thought wtf Im gonna have to rma. then I remembered that one of the power connectors hadn't snapped properly when I put the 5850 in, for some reason one of them was really tight. so I shoved it in as hard as I could and, waddayaknow, it worked! (yes, I know that the previous sentence is perfect material for a thats what she said joke) I had always assumed that it just wouldn't boot if one of the connectors was in wrong. Or maybe the 4850 flipped some switch in the settings.
