i recently got that asus motherboard with a Phenom II x4 965 cpu, but when i monitor the CPU speed in CPU-Z i notice the multiplier keeps bouncing from x4, x11, x13.5 , x17 in a random fashion.

So i am wondering is it a feature in this mobo that lowers the multiplier if the system is idle? will i be able to disable that feature?

thanks in advance.

Yep, that is Cool n Quiet. It should jump up as soon as you need the power and have minimal performance impact, but if you want to disable it just disable cool n quiet in the BIOS.

You can also disable it in Windows, what OS do you have?

If i turn on games, will the speed go back to full? will it have any notable impact on gaming?

Yep, that is the idea. The old Phenom I's did have a performance hit, but I believe with the PII's the performance hit is negligible. I would recommend leaving it on unless you OC or run into problems.
