sup guys hows it going first post for me so take it easy. was wondering how come the new HD ATI cards are only using 256bit interface. im looking at alot of overclocking forums and it seems that the cards do pretty well even not overclocked. im looking to get a new next gen card to replace my 8800gt EVGA SCE. Maybe you guys could send me a link or give me a little more information about them. im still debating on getting the HD 4870 2gb Vapor or the HD 4890 1gb Vapor. it seems that the 4890 is only getting about 6-8FPS over the 4870. the 2gb version seemed to catch my eye but alot are saying that the extra 1gb isnt worth it. im thinking maybe not now but soon yea. heres my comp specs just incase:

P4 e8400 3.0 (OC'd to 3.8)
4GB DDR2 XMS Corsair Memory
EVGA 8800GT (Superclocked Edition) 512/256
Asus 23inch Widescreen HDMI Monitor 2ms blah blah blah (Still waiting on Newegg to Get it to me o_O)

so basically i know i got alot of questions on this post just trying to get as much information as i can before i buy either one of these cards. looks like friday will be the day i buy one. please help me out in anyway u can and thanks alot in advance!

its just amazes me that the ATI cards are very close if not running better than the Geforce cards which are rocking the 448/512 bit interface. thats basically what im trying to find out.

ATI cards use GDDR5 ram, Nvidia do not. That is why ati doesn't bother using a larger bus. I have to assume Nvidia will use a smaller bus in the GT300 as well when they start using GDDR5.

GDDR5 is quad pumped instead of double like GDDR3. Thus 256bit 1ghz GDDR5 is the same performance as 512bit 1ghz GDDR3

thanks dae, now i just finished looking at the XFX 260GTX Black Edition and omg from what im seeing and hearing alot are saying its almost as good as a stock GTX280. think i may need to dig a little deeper and hell at 189.99 thats a awesome card. alot are saying go for the GTX 275 if i go the nvidia route im guessing the open GL 3.0>2.1 and the clock speeds of course. but why spend the xtra money on a 275 when its still not going to be DX 11 compat. so maybe ill just get the XFX 260 BE and wait for the next gen cards

Mantis, at that resolution I would just get a 4870 1GB for now. You can pay about $150 (less on occasion) and get plenty of performance. Plus, you won't feel like you completely wasted money if/when next gen. cards come out in the next few months.

Agreed. A 4870 1GB card will be plenty juice for a 23" monitor even at 1920x1200. Also, don't waste the monye on a factory OC'd card, just get a stock speed card and use the ATI Overdrive or nTune to OC the card.
