Monitor goes black after start up and computer wont start in safe mode

Hello,
My computer screen goes black right after the desktop appears. It's running XP but hitting F8 won't send it into safe mode. I know it's still running because the wireless system is still working all the other components. My laptop did this as well after installing the lates windows updates. I was able to restore the laptop to a time before the updates, but I can't get the desktop in safe mode to do that. Any suggestions?

Have to boot from a Windows CD, or on a working computer burn a Rescue CD to boot from.
