if the motherboard light comes on, does that mean the psu and the mobo are both working. I ask this because when i turn on the computer i just built, only the mobo light stays on, everything else doesnt turn on. thanks, my mobo is the asus m4a785td-m evo

AFAIK yes. Maybe you're thinking nothing else turns on because nothing appears on your monitor? Do you hear the other components running or not?
