Hi all,

I'm looking for a lightweight (slimline) cd-rw
drive to accompany my ultralight laptop.
These seem to be somewhat hard to find. One month
CompUSA sells them, another month not. Other stores
often never sell them. And worse, often they are
ridiculously overpriced. My question is, does anyone
know of a good model that is affordable and where
to get it?

Thanks.

Without knowing the make and model of the laptop you want to upgrade it's
almost imposible to answer your question. nor do you specify whether you
want an internal or external drive.

Generally speaking, CD burners of almost every shape and size for laptops
are widely available on eBay, both internal and external.

Regards,

James

Slimline external cd-rw drives tend to be expensive,
as vendors charge a premium for lightweight models.

While there are many brands, the drives are in fact
made by just a couple of manufacturers (Toshiba and
Matsushita). Expect to pay around $250 for a new
Toshiba.

According to PriceGrabber this appears to
be the smallest and cheapest slimline on
the market at $146:

Plextor also makes one that is a little
more expensive at $149:

You can take it from here.

bus powered models are particularly nice - can use them w/o AC on
the go.

otherwise, ebay.com for any cheap, older PCMCIA CD-RW drive, like the HP
m820 SCSI model. (but you'll likely have to use an AC adapter...).

The pcmcia versions (which, for the most part, doesn't require an
additional AC adapter) costs $150 and up. If you're cheap, like me - you
can check out the slimline USB versions (which require an ac adapter) for
under $50. eBay looks like the easiest way to go...
