If I upgrade my motherboard to one with an AM3 socket, will I be able to use my A64X2 5200+ (don't know if model matters)? It would be nice so that I could upgrade to a Phenom II CPU later.
it will only work if the board supports ddr2 ram, i.e an am2+ board, if the board was made for ddr3, then it will not work, it wont even fit, since am3 ddr3 cpus only have 939 pins, am2 and am2+ have 940.

No. For one it won't fit because AM2 CPUs have an extra pin that will prevent them from being used in AM3 boards. For another AM2 CPUs do not have a DDR3 memory controller and thus cannot be used with AM3 boards and their DDR3 memory.
Entry level AM3 CPUs are pretty cheap right now, but if you can't go AM3 yet then you could get a good AM2+ board to overclock your current CPU, and then drop in a Phenom II later. You should even be able to use your existing RAM with an AM2+ board.

^ I should add that if you go with an AM2+ board for now, make sure it's a good one that actually lists Phenom II CPUs on it's particular CPU support page.
