ya...i saw, but I hear a lot of people say that if the cooler is compatible with the x1900 series, then it should be compatible with the 4800 series...I wanted to know if this is true or not...dont feel like wasting money on something that aint going to fit...

well i have the 4850 that has the reference design cooler and it overheats ridiculously...when Im gaming, it will reach 105C which is wayyyyyy too hot...one time, my rig actually shut off because the video card overheated....I really hate constantly worrying about the temperature...but at the same time, i dont want to spend $40 on a cooler...

Ahslan I run 2x4850's and have the same issue. Thats if I leave the fan on auto. On Auto my cards seem to keep the fans low until the temps hit near 100 then the fans ramp up for a few seconds to exhaust the hot air before returning to a lower speed. If I manually adjust the fan I can keep the cards cool. For idling and desktop functions I keep my fan at 40% (this was the highest I could turn it without noticing a difference in volume). For gaming I have to crank the fans to atleast 70%, this usually keeps my temps below 90 but I will admit the fan is loud...

ahslan... you should check if 4850 didn't get clogged with dust... i've herd of a few cases that the area between the heat sink and the fan was clogged and fan ramping up did little to nothing, so make sure its clean. make sure your case has good airflow

mmm...when I game, I always manually set it the fan speed to 100% (which is ridiculously loud)...and even then, sometimes my card reaches 105C...I have a WingRS case with one intake fan in the front and one output fan in the back (both fans are 120mm fans)...besides that, I also have a pci slot cooler my friend gave to me when I told him I was having heating issues (this is the one he gave me - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835888112)

The past couple of days Ive been doing some research and found out that the mounting holes on the 4850 are about 75.4mm diagonally...so, I think imma pull the trigger and purchase one of these coolers: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270415339166
I want to get that one because, 1. its cheap, and 2. the diagonal distance can be adjusted to exactly fit any cooler that has a diagonal of 55mm to 80mm...along with the cooler, I also plan on buying these copper heatsinks for the vga ram chips http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=220435864930

Let me know what you guys think...

Edit- thx xc0mmiex, I cleaned my card about a month ago because i noticed it had a ton of dust and this reduced about 10C from the max temps...thing is, that after a month the temps started to go back to the 100s...maybe I need to buy a dust filter for my intake fan...
