I wanted to say thanks for the advice from people here; your time and expertise is very much appreciated, especially fullmetall who made sure I got the right power supply and saved my weekend!
I've another question though! I ended up getting the Phenom II X4 955 3.2ghz. However on the clock speed under both msinfo32 and the excellent SpeedFan utility the processor speed is coming out at 1.6ghz. Do I need to go and alter bios settings? Or is there simply something here I don't understand?
For those interested in the end I settled with the following spec:
Phenom II X4 955 3.2ghz
Crucial PC2-6400 800mhz DDR2 - 2GB x 4 for 8GB ram
Gigabyte MA790X-UD4
GeForce GTX260 (wanted the Gigabyte ATI 4870 but www.overclockers.co.uk screwed up my order so I ended up buying the GeForce from PC World.)
Western Digital 1TB HDD
Coolermaster Centurion 5
Corsair TX650 PSU
