Hi,

a few days ago I bought a used Thinkpad 770X at eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d [...] 4124688538

Besides from the (probably) damadged battery and the missing floppy
drive this seems to be a nice device.

Now I learned that there was a bug in the TP 770X causing Linux to
not detect the amount of RAM correctly.

I got an update utility from the IBM pages and the readme file
starte like this:

  "  IBM ThinkPad 770X                               September 20, 2001
     System Program Service Diskette

     Version 1.10 (IIET42WW)  "

Now my question: How can I see if I should use this update and get
this BIOS version installed?
It might be that this laptop already has the new BIOS in there - can
I harm it by trying to run the update process in this case?

Another question: The IBM page wrote that I should have a full battery
to run the BIOS update program.  Unfortunately the battery seems to
be dead (at least that's what I suspect, because the seller wrote
"battery: existing - no guarantee", which for me sounds like "forget
about that rotten battery" ).

Can I do any harm to the laptop by running the BIOS update if the
battery is damadged of has only 10% capacity left or so...?

Or can I safely use the normal power cable instead?

Thanks for any answers! :-)

Press and hold down the F1 key while powering up the system. Release after
the MEMCOUNT completes and you hear the POST beep. The BIOS splash screen
that comes up will have all of the information about your system including
the BIOS revison level, unit model and serial numbers, etc.

No, you won't hurt it. The upgrade utility will simply halt with the message
that the upgrade isn't required.

Without a fully charged battery installed the update utility will refuse to
complete. Try it with the battery you have, as long as it holds almost _any_
charge and reports that it's fully charged to the BIOS, the update might be
successful.

Thanks a lot for the information, I printed it out and will follow it
when the laptop arrived here in a few days... will keep you informed
if all went right then. :-)
