I'd go with i5 hand down, LGA775 is an EOL socket.

i would get a q9550 because it has cheap mobos ... if you plan to spend 150$+ on mobo get the i5...
i5 is not that better than q9550

I guess a good question would be, do you want to be able to upgrade your CPU down the line?

If yes, then I would go i5.
If no, then demonnn's advice applies.

Reasons for the chip? I5 for a little more longevity of the board and upgrade capabilities later.

I would say i5 as well. although like the others have said it's your budget that will be the deciding factor.

Agree with everyone here. The Q9550 is a great choice if you are on a tight budget. You can get a full featured motherboard such as a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L for about $90 and 4 GB of RAM for around $50. And combined with a good heatsink, it will generally OC past 3.5 GHz.

Otherwise, get an i5.
