Building an HTPC, my main requirements are as follows:

Must be able to play back high definition files (mkv etc) in 1920x1080p. Must also be able to output 5.1/7.1 channel audio to my home theater receiver. Either over hdmi, or optical.

What do you folks recommend for Process/Mobo. Also what would be a good video card for this?

I already have the hard drives, but would like a case selection that would allow for 4+ internals. Would like to keep this under $600 if possible.

Honestly, I'd suggest you check out avsforums - they have a great section about building a HTPC and even have builds in various ranges.

I don't think you'll have much issue playing back at 1080 - a 4670 would do it (can get it for $60 or so).

Other than that, a decent motherboard and processor will do. I'm sure you can keep that well under $600.
