Hello All,

I am ordering the parts to build my next gaming rig and I question if I should use the OS Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate. I am not sure of the difference.

Here are the parts and set up that may be pertinent to the OS that I choose.

Processor
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920

Motherboards
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Graphics Card
HIS H597F2GDG Radeon HD 5970 (Hemlock) 2GB 512 (256 x 2)-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP
I will be using the Eyefinity setup and I may eventually use CrossFire mode

Memory
G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD

Hard Drive
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

I will have 3 or 4 of these hard drives in this system and I will be setting up
a RAID 5 or RAID 0 + 1
I have to learn more about this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have a look here and choose which features you need. TBH, Premium is enough for most home users.

This a good article that explains all you need to know.

I think Home edition generally is more than enough for most uses. It doesn’t come with XPmode, but you can use VMlite instead, and no encryption support, again you can use open source programs for this.
