Hi. I have a Thinkpad T40, running Windows XP. When it goes on battery
power, the CPU speed drops from 1400 MHz to 600 MHz, just as it's supposed
to. How would I make it do that _without_ unplugging it?

Use IBM's Battery MaxiMiser to create a custom power scheme. It's the
horizontal battery icon in the taskbar with the charge percentage displayed
on it. Left-click it to get started.

Thanks. Should've checked the battery gauge, but noooo...

I heard that's a switching-mode power supply noise, but I have two
bricks for the Thinkpad (AC and DC/AC), not to mention countless others
around here, and all are AFAICT silent.

I find the noise present for both AC and Battery power. But it is very quiet.

Huh. Dunno. I've heard the fan noise (sometimes), otherwise the TP
seems silent. Maybe I'm not sensitive enough, or maybe my environment
isn't quiet enough. But I've used it in a library, so you'd think that
would be quiet enough.
