I am using a Q6600 for a few years now and it has been running @ 3GHZ. Now its running at 2.4 GHZ and when I try to OC it my PC restarts. I am an extreme gamer and like games like crysis. I have enough money for th Q9650. I have a Biostar T-Power 2 I45 motherboard, 4GB of RAM 1066,XFX 4870 GPU. Is it worth the upgrade, will I see a big difference?

The gains will be very slight over a 3.0ghz Q6600.

Does the CPU or GPU overheat?

No, the GPU runs at 42C and the cpu runs at 21C @2.4GHZ

What power supply are you using (and how old is it)?

How are you cooling that system? Is it installed in a fridge?

Im sure he's giving up idle temps, not load temps which are more important to know, considering his problem.

I've had a Q6600 myself and I can tell you if it only gets to 21C idle it will be fine under load, but I find 21C hard to believe unless he lives on the North Pole.

But a Q6600 can't idle at 21°C unless the system is in a rather cold room. I have two Q6600 and they idle at 36°C (lowest core temp) in a room at 22°C.

that board is a beast. u dont need q9650. u wont see a difference.

He was talking about CPU, not his board.

Been running my Q6600 at 3.6Ghz and 54c under load for around 2 years. Recently put it back down to 2.4Ghz and can't say I've noticed any difference in games.

Running that with 8gb geil DDR800 and a 8800gtx.

if you are going to get a Q9650 I would recomend a compleat upgrade. Get the Core i7 920 and a cheap board.

you WILL notice a difference in games. i dont know what ^^^ are posting but yes you will notice a difference - look up benchmarks here on toms.

i also agree with some though - go for a new setup, ditch 775 socket.

ATI 4850 oc'd 680/1158 with aftermarket Zalman
Asus P5Q Pro mobo

if you oc the 9650, i definitely think it could make a significant difference

Clock for clock that would net you about 7 percent gain in performance. I don't see that being a worth while upgrade. I would skip a couple generations until the 32nm or 22nm chips are out.
