hi,

I have a Sony Vaio vgc-rc310 and I need to replace the graphics card.. Is this one a good choice?PNY - NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT 1GB DDR2 PCI Express Graphics Card
its a PCI Express x16 card
Is it something I can just install without other modifications such as to the PSU? If not, what card would be a good replacement

get a Nvidia 9500GT or better yet an ATI 4670, if you can run the 7600GT you can run either of them

That 9400GT might actually be slower than your old 7600GT. I guess it will be o.k if you're not going to play any games on it.
