WeaKnees sells HD upgrade brackets with and without an extra fan.

Is the extra cooling recommended? What about the extra fan noise?

It definitely lowers the temperature of the unit. I had one running
constantly at 45°C, and pulling the drive, adding the Weaknees bracket
and extra fan, and dropping the drive back in gave me temperatures around
36°C. I did this even though I didn't upgrade the drive because my
two-drive unit (with the extra fan) ran cooler than the one-drive unit.

I'm having some issues with a fan on the two-drive unit, but I suspect it
is because I didn't get a screw tightened correctly (too much or too little
can cause noise). I can only hear it when I'm right next to the unit,
though. The other unit is dead silent. Since I did it second, I suspect
I did it better. I just haven't had a chance to open the other one up
to fix it.

I have 2 Seagate 120's, no extra fan. System runs quiet and cool. System
information on my tdc240xx says 31 degrees C. Your performance may vary.

It made it 8 degrees C cooler for me, Weaknees also includes a
replacement fan for the OE fan, thats a tad quieter, but slower.
The Hard Drives tend to be noiser than the fans; and its likely more
important not to have the TiVo in an enclosed location than on top of a
TV or an open shelf.
