Generic dvd rw driver download

Hello, My Acer notebook does not recognize my external dvd player-do I need a driver download?

That's way too open a question, and I don't think that there is a "generic" dvd rw driver.

Questions: Model of notebook, model of DVD drive, method of attachment (USB - Firewire - ESATA - proprietary - smoke signals), if the device shows in Device Manager, if the device shows in BIOS. Does the device appear to be receiving power (does it spin if you put in a DVD)?
