Hello, is there some free software on the internet I can download to fix this boot problem when Windows XP tries to boot from the hard drive? I get this message on a black screen that goes as follows “Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM “. I am prompted to put in the original setup CD-ROM, which I do not have.

I am trying to fix an old dell desktop with a windows XP OS installed, for a family member. I don’t have any repair discs, so I am looking for a free boot CD download or something that can repair the corrupted file I listed above. Please don’t post a link to any websites that offers free floppy disk downloads because my current computer doesn’t have a floppy disc drive, also I have spent a couple of days searching via Bing with no luck so I thought I would ask some pros before I waste any more time on it.
