I recently bought a "refurbished" Dell Precision Xeon 5520 Workstation. It has a single processor and I would like to add another. Can I just plug it in and add cooling? Anything to change in the BIOS? Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks

As long as there is a second socket, get a CPU that is the same model number as the first, and then just plug it in and put a heatsink and fan on top. You should be good to go. However, note that any version of Windows with "Home" in the name won't recognize a second CPU. They will recognize all of the cores in one CPU and then ignore the second CPU.
I have a similar Workstation from Dell with one Xeon 5450. Must the second CPU have a close or the same stepping? Dell hasn't updated the firmware for my model in the last year or so.
It needs to be the same model number. If I remember correctly, steppings do not matter, but the CPU must be the same model number, e.g. putting a second Xeon 5450 in with the first 5450.

------------------------------Upcoming Overdue Build: Dual-socket workstation, ~32 GB DDR3, OS on a fast SSD, high-end GPU, all wrapped up in a huge tower case. Coming H2 2011.
Yes, I am actually still running the Pentium III 1.0B Coppermine in the picture.
