FRAPS effect on FPS?

I often see video's where people make a point of saying something like "This is running at 30 fps with FRAPs, but without, it runs at about 50fps"....

Is this because they are RECORDING with FRAPS? Or is this just because they are running FRAPS to show the frame rate (by this i mean leaving FRAPS open in the system tray so the little yellow numbers that show FPS appear in the corner of the game window)?



TL;DR - Will running FRAPS lower my FPS?

Recording with FRAPS locks your fps to 24/30/60/whatever only while recording. The fps counter has little effect on fps while not recording.

No. Running fraps will no affect ur FPS. if you use the record or benchmark feature tho, u will see a sharp drop in FPS.

So if someone has decent pc and and high ref rate 230 hz monitor to get high fps all that will be sacrificed to only 60 fps for the sake of recording with fraps?! or the real gameplay will not be affected?
