Hello,
Every Sat night something is ran on my computer that changes my desktop icons/shortcuts from their usual picture to a generic windows picture icon. I don't see any program that is scheduled to run (updates, etc) on Sat nights. Is there a freeware program that anyone can think of to download that will monitor when my computer runs something in the middle of the night so I can id the culprit? thanks

Avoid free programs, as a rule, at least from third parties.
You can download from microsoft: "windows process explorer" that shows everything, and allows selectively blocking processes.

There is also professional antivirus, which allows blocking incoming / outgoing communications from any program, at will.
Professional antivirus will block unauthorized connections from the internet. These connections are occurring all the time, without your knowledge.
The free antivirus does not supply this function. But you DO need it.
