whenever i try to open regedit (the registery editor)
does not stay open. i need to delete lines from it since
i have recently had a virus but it will not stay open for
me to do so, any ideas?

The virus may still be active, since this is a known problem on
computers that are infected by some malware.

Try accessing REGEDIT from the Safe Mode / Administrator account. If
this does not help, check the startup settings. Many malware is loaded
during the Windows start and you can get rid of it by disabling it in
MSCONFIG. Also check the list of Processes in the Task Manager.If you
can find a process that may be related to the virus, exit it from here
and retry.
