Formating xp

Some laptops contain firmware that prevents XP from installing. You have to use a later version of windows, it won't allow the older versions.
Some laptops contain firmware that prevents ANY operating system from installing, unless you use the computer manufacturer's proprietary OS software.
Toshiba is becoming famous for this...
 


This would stop the setup to run at all, not stop the format part-way.

Try a new hard-drive. Although with prices for those these days it's not a very cheap option anymore.
