AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE Overclocking

Got some great advice here when I was assembling my build, now finally getting around to overclocking, but I seem to have hit a snag. Tried a moderate overclock first, raised multiplier to 18, resulting in 3.6 ghz overall. I started prime95 while watching the temp monitors on AMD overdrive, prime 95 wasn't running for more than a minute before temps started shooting into the 70's and I killed prime95 for fear of melting my CPU (MB all the while remaining in the low 30's). From my reading around the boards and some of the guides, this seems odd to me, especially with how low my ambient temp is and high airflow past CPU fan, my case has a vented side and I have three 120MM exhaust fans installed. I am betting this is a newbie mistake, really appreciate any light anybody could shed. Specs and relevant info below:

AMD Phenom II 965 be
-raised multiplier to 18
-CPU voltage 1.38

ASrock 870 extreme3
-NB voltage 1.25

4 x 2GB GSkill Ripjaw DDR3 1600

Sapphire Vapor X HD Radeon 5770

what the hell you use for the CPU cooler, after-market or a stock, do not expect the stock cooler can cool the CPU with a maximum, get a cooler aftermarket like hyper 212 very cheap.

Using stock heatsink/fan right now, I know I will need to upgrade to do any serious overclocking. However, I have read on the boards about people overclocking to 3.8 with stock air cooling so I am thinking it is a different fundamental problem.

yes they can be up to 4GHz I've heard but not seen .. but they dare not go with Prime95, and you have proven that you're too high temperature at the time of test, right ..?
Now you're down overclok, try with smart fan disabled from the bios and the fan will run up to 5000rpm over .. wow it's very noisy, REMEMBER TEMPERATURE MUST BELOW 60C at the time of stress test, regardless results of clock speed that you can get.

Got mine @3.9Ghz with no volt increase. 205Mhz "FSB" (don't recall if it was the HT link or not) and 19 multi. Have it around 60°c on load and 36°c idle with a CoolerMaster GeminII and AS5 thermal paste.

Cheers!

I'd lower the overclock if I were you. Because on 60c chip won't last long.

Got mine at 4.0Ghz with H70 cooler with auto voltage.

4.01ghz 1.44v 200fsb x20 gives me idle temps of 31 and full load on prime 95, 56 after 3hrs Keeping it at 3.8ghz for lower volts and temps 1.37v 200 fsb x19. 28 at idle and about 52 load.

forgot to mention your cooler. if it's not liquid, your temps are fake or your build is in very cold air

thermalright venomous x-rt with mx-4 thermal paste. im using hw monitor to monitor temps in conjunction with the asus provided pc probe. my rig is in the basement it is fairly cool down here. im using an antec 1200 case with 3 x120 mm fans on the front - intake, top 240mm - exhaust and 2 x 120mm rear - exhaust fans.

So write your cooling system everytime, because ppl can think that u r usin stock cooler with no airflow in your case living in africa they could try to put 1.5voltage and smoke out the ****** house

My apologies i thought i had written my cooler specs but apparently not. And with that logic one could also assume that if somebody is referring to oc'ing more than just a few mhz that the system would obviously have an aftermarket cooler. If somebody claims a 4ghz oc id be interested to know what they used for cooling but i wouldnt automatically call b.s unless they specifically claimed it with stock cooler. But i will definately be more specific in the future seeing as people apparently like to call bs without knowing the details. No need to be rude edgaraslt.
