I'm reading something about the technical specifications of the plug for the USB 3.0 standard, and am unclear about one section.

It says that one side of the plug has electrodes for connection to a pair of signal wires for the USB 2.0 standard, a power line and a ground line. What I don't understand is, is the power line and the ground line mentioned above only for USB 2.0 compatibility, or for both USB 2.0/3.0.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
