Is the Nvidia 9800 GX2 relatively close to the ATI 4890 in performance? Would putting a 9800 GX2 in dual SLI be slightly better than one gtx 295? Is one 9800 GX2 better than a single gtx 260 as well?

GTX260 < 4890 < 9800GX2 < GTX295

The 9800GX2 would prove slightly faster than a 4890, when it managed to work anyway. You have to remember that nvidia isn't exactly offering any driver support now for the 9800GX2. Quad SLI support for the 9800GX2 also isn't too great with newer games so depending on the game it could prove slower than just using one 9800GX2. Quad SLI doesn't scale too well, but I suppose that it may scale well enough for two 9800GX2s to run a little faster than a single GTX295.

I heard they run a little hot as well. Do you think i would be better of with 2 4890s, i have always had ATI graphics cards, but it would be interestingly new to try out nvidia. Would you say for Crysis, i would get better frame rates with 2 4890s in CFX. So dual CFX/ SLI is more reliable, or open to less conflicts than quad graphics?

yes, they are similar in performance at stock speed, but the 4890 overclocks better. Both will compare to the gtx275, and will be faster than a gtx295 if you are running two of them. Also, the 9800x2 is a little harder to find in general and will probably be more expensive, might have scaling issues in games that don't like multiple cards (especially in quad sli mode). The 4890 can be found for under $200 on newegg, so if it were me that is where I would put my money if its a choice between the two.

I have found the 9800 gx2 for £150. Slightly cheaper than the 4890. Do you know what power supply it will require? Will the ATI 4890 be less power consuming?

I would not spend any money on a GX2, the 4890 is top notch and you wont have to deal with the heat issues.....
