hello..

I am planning for an upgrade from my 8600GT and I can't find anything..the problem is that my mobo is a little old (one PCI-E 1.0x slot) and almost all the cards i am searching for in google are PCI-E 2.0x. So I am lost and maybe there are no decent PCI-E 1.0x cards anymore(i realllllly hope am wrong)...I am looking for a video card that would play game under DX10..I am not looking for a very high end card..I am satisfied with playing at 800x600 or 1024x768..

Motherbrd : ASUSTeK P5K SE Intel P35.

Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz.

Graphics : NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB GDDR3.

Memory : kingmax Semiconductor 2 GB DDR2-SDRAM PC5300 .

Storage : WDC SATA-II 80 GB. x2

thanks for reading..

here's the deal man(or girl i guess). think about PCI-E 2 as just a faster PCI-E 1. So PCI-E 2 cards will definitely work on your motherboard. The only situation which might give you a headache is when they have 2 graphics chips on one board (GTX 295, 4870x2, 4850x2, 9800GX2), PCI-E 1 can't handle those as fast. They will still work. However, no offense or anything, seeing you didnt know about the backwards compatibility, i doubt you're looking into the enthusiast market, so for your range, dont worry about it. PCI-E 2 cards will work just the same.

PCI-E 2.0 cards should work fine on a 1.0 board.
You should grab an HD4670. It's cheap, small, power efficient and should handle those resolutions just fine.
Also, stop playing at 800x600 man, that's just sad.

wow that was a quick answer..thanks

so basically a pci-e 2 is backward compatible with any 1.0x mb and even with two chips in the card (goood news) ..anyway..thanks for both..and it is a 'man' uncfan..

just one thing..i HAVE a p35 chipset on mb..and quoting wikipedia :

''In June 2007 Intel released the specification of the Intel P35 chipset which does not support PCIe 2.0 only PCIe 1.1.[18] Some people may be confused by the P35 block diagram which states the Intel P35 has a PCIe x16 graphics link (8 GB/s) and 6 PCIe x1 links (500 MB/s each).[19] For simple verification one can view the P965 block diagram which shows the same number of lanes and bandwidth but was released before PCIe 2.0 was finalized. Intel's first PCIe 2.0 capable chipset was the X38 and boards began to ship from various vendors (Abit, Asus, Gigabyte) as of October 21, 2007.[20] AMD started supporting PCIe 2.0 with its RD700 chipset series and nVidia started with the MCP72.[21] The specification of the Intel P45 chipset includes PCIe 2.0.

should I worry about what's written in bold?

No, that means P35 boards can't have a PCIe 2.0 slot. It does not mean the PCIe 1.1 slot it can have would be unable to use 2.0 cards. The slot isn't an issue so stop worrying about it.
The better question is around how much are you looking to spend and what kind of PSU you have. I know you say you are "satisfied" with those low resolutions but those are really pretty bad.

jyjjy :

Budget is around 130$ ..PSW is FSP group inc 300W..should I upgrade it as well ?

thanks for the great help so far everyone..Tom's Hardware ROCKSS

Well if I had to guess that PSU can handle an HD4670 but nothing more so anything better will require a new PSU as well. Considering your budget I'd say the HD4670 is still the way to go. It's $50-70 and world's better than that 8600gt. It should handle 1280x1024 and lower very well and give acceptable performance a few notches higher even depending on the game/settings.

Your 300W PSU definitely would have to be upgraded.

You should be looking to spend $200 between the PSU and video card. Your current PSU can't handle more than it presently has. Spending too little money won't give much of an upgrade.

This is maybe a way to go:
PSU: http://www.ncixus.com/products/36143/PPCS420X/PC%20Power%20%26%20Cooling/

HD4850: http://www.ncixus.com/products/40867/AX4850%20512MD3-PH/PowerColor/

A HD4670 is a absolutely HUGE upgrade over an 8600gt 256mb and his PSU can likely handle it. He came in talking about gaming at 1024x768 and under... telling him to replace his psu and spend more than he wants to get an HD4850 is totally ignoring where he is coming from.

h2k47, ignore this post, the man is talking outta his rear end.

Jyjjy is right, a 4670 will be perfect for you, getting a 4850 would be a waste of cash in this case.

Hmmmm thats odd.... now why is my sisters mini tower with an AcBell 300w running a GTX260 216 with an E6550? oh wait, thats only ~250w!

IDIOT

For the same price of most 4670's you can find 9600's.

The 9600GSO > 4670. But barely, @ 35 dollars though you cant really go wrong. counting mir's ofc.

Its FSP so it isnt tooooooo bad

As for the newer 9600's (atleast the GT's) they dont need the extra power connector and should also be fine (lower power requirements compared to the older 9600's etc)

Perhaps check the online power supply calculators around the place and see

The new 512/1gig 9600 GSO is an entirely different and MUCH weaker card and should never be recommended.

pardon my ignorance..but arent all ati cards short of physx thingy that made this guy unable to run velvet assassin?
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1193297.html

in short, the guy has ATi 4870X2 and CANT run velvet assassin..can u believe that??

nyway, am not a big fan of this game honestly but what IF the grand great game devs wanted to implement physx in their games in the future..?!!

as for the PSU..am glad I can keep that and run 4670..I think with a lil more that 130 , I can even get 4870 ..according to GPUREVIEW.COM, it needs 110W to run!!

one last thought..even if i buy a new card...there aren't any new 'decent' games to play .. assassin's creed 2, MW2, MAFIA II..etc are ALL pushed to the end of the year..what a shame..

There's always plenty of decent new games. In the last month or two for the PC there's been Prototype, Street Fighter 4, Trine, the Monkey Island remake, Sims 3, Overlord 2, ArmA 2, Bionic Commando, Spore Galactic Adventures, Call of Juarez, Dawn of Discovery, Ghostbusters... must be something in there that does it for you.

prototype and street fighter 4 both ran well on 8600 at high settings under 1024x768...Sims 3..COME ONNN..its a girly game!!..bionic commando didnt get good reviews..call of juarez SUCKS with its stupid AI and auto-aiming..dont know about the rest..but what am interested in is arcadish FPS games mainly..action hardcore ones..Crysis stuff..and I have been dying to see something new on gamespot but there arent any good ones so far..
