You can't run an AMD Phenom II on a P55 board.
That should make your decision easier. Your only options on a 1156 board are the i5 range and the i7-860 (from memory). The socket is different for different ranges of processor.

For new stuff at the moment:
AM3 - AMD Phenom II etc
775 (P35/P45) - Intel Core2Duo / Core2Quad
1156 (P55/X38/X48) - Intel i5 and i7 860
1366 (X58)- Intel i7 9xx models

yeah my mistake for not giving the mother board for the amd cpu

core i5
Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3

OR

AMD Phenom II X4 945 BOX
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AM2

The computer is for games and editing (gaming is abit more important)

i5 is faster. If you don't have a personal preference then go with the fastest one for system longevity.

The 945 and i5 are very close as far as gaming goes and both overclock well.
If the price is only $10 difference, I personally would go with the i5/P55 no doubt.

x2 what zip said.

Games are fairly even, but in some windows tasks the i5 pulls ahead. Uses less power as well (if I remember correctly). For a ten dollar price difference, it's hard to say no.

You can probably get those CPUs cheaper online as generally on etailers the 945 is like $30 cheaper than the i5 750. Anyway P55 boards are of course more expensive than a good AM3 board, so it just depends on your budget. If you can afford to go with the i5 and P55 setup without straining your budget then go for it.

I think this is more accurate on the oc front :

X4 - 4.0Ghz if your lucky
I5 - 4.5Ghz If you can chance 4 bios functions

The X4 oc's like *** compared to the I5

------------------------------ Core I7 920 D0 @ 4.2Ghz
MSI X58 Pro-E
32GB SSD, WD Blacks In R0
Sapphire HD 5870's In XFire

More accurate than what? I said they both overclock well fanboy, not they both overclock equally.

And you forget grasshopper than only about 5% of users overclock their computers. And unless your using 2-3 high end video cards, you wont notice any difference between a 3.8 X4 and a 4.5 i5 except in your power bill.

i5 ftw

PII may match more expensive CPUs in gaming but come on, they barely match Kentsfield in performance! I5 if you want to still be on top of the gaming scene for the next couple/few years to come. =/

I'd say you are good either way --- but if you go with the Phenom 945 purchase the MA770T-UD3P AM3.

Crucial has some DDR3 1333 with Micron chips that are qualified for the mobo that run around $73US for a 2x2Gb kit.

And if you can find one the long side (84mm?) of the Thermalright HR-09S Type 2 mosfet cooler works great with the existing mounts on the board.

I agree.

If the prices are the same it's a no brainer. Go with the i5.
