I'm looking to get a computer for my mom. For the same price with all other components the same, I'm looking at an Intel E6300 or Phenom X4 9750. Which is better, faster dual core or slower quad core? She's not a huge computer user. Very light gaming, office apps, etc. The biggest concern is probably longevity, in case she ever does become a heavier computer user.

I'd go for the faster dual core or the new Athlon 2 X4. The old Phenom 1's are crapola.

i agree you should go with a phenom II x2 which is a cheap very fast dual core

I would recommend the Athlon II x2 or x4.

Get a cheap low power/heat dual core, that will be plenty for her. Athlon II X2 or E5200 should do her good. And they're a little easier on the electricity bill and should last a good while. =P

Both of those have a good head room for OCing (E5200 does a little better) if you want to squeeze out some extra power in the future
