hi

I am planning to build a new rig based on i5 750 with ASUS P7P55D Mobo, but i read about burning foxconn sockets. Asus and gigabyte both use this socket as far as i know. this i really freaking me out. Is it really that big an issue?? is this socket dangerous for extreme overclocking(4GHz+) or for normal use too(including moderate oc upto 3.6GHz)?

So advice me which mobo should i pick. i have option among these only -

1. Asus P7P55d
2. Asus P7P55d pro
3. MSI P55 GD65
4. Gigabyte P55 UD3R
5. Intel P55KG / P55WG

I will be overclocking to around 3.6Ghz. Should i stay away from Foxconn socket mobos(ASUS, Gigabye..) or it will be fine?

Thanks.

When this news came out i went to Fry's and look at the motherboards on the shelf and open some mb boxes. EVGA, Intel motherboards are the one that i have confrmed to use LOTES socket.

It is a serious problem specially when you OC your board/CPU. Read this article and look at the burned sockets/CPU

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3661

If you want to be sure not to be affected by the foxconn socket problem go for EVGA motherboard. LOTES sockets on EVGA motherboards are confirmed to support highest current rating among the tested boards. Read the article.

You decide...

my i5's on 3.6 ghz for around a month now msi gd65 without problems so far . intel dp55kg is a nice mobo , but you can also have asus and gigabyte options for that price .

that mobo is NOT given on any of gskill's pages for compatibility , all other msi/asus/giga boards are . either check out intel's own mobo site for compatibility , or go with other boards ..

also , if ure primarily gaming , check out tom's article on 5770 (review). the gain from overclocking an i5 from stock to 3.8 is minimal .... u may need it in the future , perhaps , but an i5 is certainly enough at stock for every game out there , like crysis , hawx , far cry2 etc !

i am saying this , because after reading that , even i am thinking of slowing my i5 to 3.2 , as less heat/power is always better especially when i dont need it .

i can give my word that it is not gonaa be a problem at 3.6-3.8 (around 1.32 Vcore) .

this is also the practical limit for many air cooling systems : for example a hyper 212+ . i could do a 4.0 , but i dont like those temps . anything for 4.0+ requires costlier fans , which is both unnecessarry and not worth it , especially for gaming .

so according to u upto 3.6 ghz foxconn socket is not an issue... in that case i would preffer P7P55D. i hope it works fine.....

are u in india ? i went to nehru place , got an msi gd65 , because p7p55d was 10.5 , ud3r was 11.5, gd65 = 9.5 and has sli/cf ... only intel and msi are not overpriced in india ... asus and gigabyte are a lot costlier ... in u.s p7p55d and msi gd65 and ud3r are almost same in price ...

ya i am in india and am aware of the prices in US and India. Acually i've already bought the RAM, asked my friend to buy from USA. got it for 70$ !. BTW ur GD 65 has which socket? Lotes or foxconn?

And i fing it really unlikely that this RAM wont be compatible with intel mobo.. May be this mobo launched recently so it isnt added in the list.... It should accept this ram, but i need to be sure before buying it..!

i dont think so ... at not at these 3 shops : smc international , computer empire and cost2cost ... i was exhausted to check more . i did not see ANY evga board there .

my gd65 has foxconn ... even gigabyte and asus have same ... i dont think ud4p or p7p55d-pro have any advantage over gd65 considering their price ... they ARE more stable at 4.0 ghz , but my cooler , hyper 212+ , got it from SMC , cannot keep the temps cool enough at that speed ... but it can easily do 3.8 ghz with msi mobo on my i5 ....

even i m planning to gat a cm Hyper 212+ for my build. i'll oc to around 3.2 - 3.4... it should be fine. i'll go for asus because of more power phases, better sound quality and personal preference..
