Hi.

For keep the current speed and performance, you should add the same model that you have currently. In other words, DDR3 2000MHz 8-9-8-24

No, you don't have to use 2G chips.

you pretty safely can buy 2x4G

The two ram controllers should be pretty independent, so theoretically there shouldn't be pretty much of trouble even if the two pairs are not exactly of the same kind... for anithing more it should be experimented on.

The size isn't important, the specs are.

I must be lucky then, because I paired 2x2GB of Corsair's budget DDR3-1333 CL9 with 2x4GB of G.Skill's DDR3-1600 Sniper, CL8, and it's working just fine. EVERYTHING about the two sets is completely different, and it's rock solid. Huh. Maybe I missed something, or maybe the AM3 790FX (MSI 790FX-GD70) platform can just chew through any RAM you throw at it. Or maybe I'm just lucky.

But as long as you at least try to keep the specs the same, size shouldn't matter.

Previous setup uses 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 1600 MHZ 9-9-9-24 then I added 2x2gb Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600 MHZ 9-9-9-24 on my mobo* [GA890GPA-UD3H if necessary]. My system ran fine but my timing changed to 11-11-11-29. I changed the timing manually via bios back to 9-9-9-24 and ran memtest86+, and it passed. So technically you can just add a different brand and it should be fine as long as the timing and speed are the same, but some mobo can be picky. I suggest running Memtest86+ for a full test, or overnight if you're really worried.
