Dead flash drive

Is there an easy (preferrably free) way to recover data from an unresponsive flash drive? I have one that is recognized by XP but if access is attempted XP wants to format it.

Depends on why it is unresponsive. Clonezilla has a good rep for recovering data from drives where the partition structure or directories got corrupted, but nothing can do it if your controller is dead. Well, maybe a good lab could replace the controller...
