I have 5 surround sound speakers and a sub woofer and am wondering how to connect them to my pc. Is there a sound card out there to enable me to do this or will it have to be via an amp or separate surround system.

If they are home audio speakers, yes you will need to hook them up to an amp.
You will either need a sound card that supports Dolby Digital Live Encoding through Coaxial/TOSLINK to the receiver OR a receiver that supports 6 channel RCA input and three 3.5mm to dual RCA adapters.
