Fans spinning, but no boot

My wife's PC has had problems booting for the past year, but the last week it became unable to boot entirely. It started during a power surge and the PC turned itself off, despite being connected to a surge guard. Ever since then the PC boots seemingly at random, sometimes immediately, sometimes the fans spin for minutes/hours before it eventually boots or it doesn't start at all, the fans just keep spinning.

The problem doesn't really make sense since it sometimes boots without problems, so it can't be shorted or fried.

Mobo: ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
PSU: Chieftec GPS-550AB-A
Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce 9800GTX
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
HDD2: WD 320 GB SAT2 WD3200JS
RAM: 2x 1GB Kingston (not sure on model)

On a side note, my own PC was connected to the same surge guard at the time, and has never had any problems like this.

Hope you can help, thanks.

  1. I'm not a real expert but have you tried to reset your bios? And have you tried the components in other computers ? Sounds to me that its either your psu or motherboard but then again I can't say for sure.
  2. We've reset the bios, but haven't tried the components anywhere else since we don't have access to a compatible computer to try them in.
