Why cant i do a system restore on my computer xp

Hello,
Im trying to do a system restore to a previous date, and it stops halfway through and says it cannot complete because my antivirus wont allow it to finish. it prompts me to turn my antivirus off and try again. when i try to open Norton it doesnt do anything. i ran a troubleshoot and it says incompatable application detected......what do i do now?

And, you are restoring, for what reason ?
Try duplicating your efforts in Safe Mode.
