Hello,
Please help, my acer 2920 froze yesterday so I held the power on button for 5 secons to turn it off. When I boot it up it comes to a black screen and says 'operating system not found'

When I put in my recovery cd/backup cd thingy, it just says 'No HDD available'.

Im not worried about loosing data if it means my laptop will work again.
Any advice highly welcome

You want to try a bootable rescue disk first. You can build yourself one using BartPE with another computer.
Did you get into BIOS to see if the HDD was showing up there?

Also I forgot to mention im running Vista. would I be able to reboot my entire system with a windows xp disk?
Interestingly my harddrive is not showing up.

Yes; your laptop will run fine on XP.
You say your HDD isn't showing up in BIOS?

A replacement HDD would run about $55 WD 250GB 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive
