I have a system board with on board sata. My machine is powered up and running. I have a hard drive in the system with the power cable connected to it but the sata signal cable isn't connected. Can I connect that signal cable to that drive with the power already connected to it without shutting down the machine?

If your motherboard doesn't support hot swap, you'll have to reboot anyhow, so it's probably safer to just shut down, connect the drive, then boot.

On the other hand, if your mobo and OS do support hot swap, you will see it. If it were me, I'd try the experiment. Actually, I have, several times, on different computers.

Don't try it with an IDE drive!
