I want to connect 10 laptops together so we can im and share files, but I do not want them connected to the internet. They will be in the same room just 10 feet apart. How can I accomplish this

Isolate them on their own VLAN and don't provide routing to the Internet.

If they only connect to each other and that is it you can use static IP addresses and have a stand alone switch connecting them. No need for any other network connections at all.

simply buy a wireless router. all laptops should also have wireless lan card. otherwise you need to buy LAN cables and connect them to the router.

 

you'll all be able to see each other without internet connection. as long as IM does not use internet, you'll be able to message each other.

 

simply setup a LAN connection
