Delete Compressed Files in Windows XP

Hello,
i have an 04 compaq desk top with just the basics that came preinstalled. my machine is running crazy! slow even after defraging, do a clean up and removing files/programs that i never use.
will deleting compressed files (8,698,862 kb)help?
Also, when my husband is online and he clicks a link thru a search engine, the link will not load and after "thinking" about the going to the address it reverts back to the initial search.
How do i fix that?

Clean the temporary Internet files, cookies, etc

You might need those compressed files, what are those?

Try to use another browser. Also may be you have problems with your antivirus software
