I personally have two front-panel slots in my PC which accept bare SATA drives, and an anti-static case that holds ten drives. These are very, very nearline storage - if I want data from one of them, or to do a backup, it takes under 30 seconds to get the storage online.

"nearline drive" will refer either to a drive that accepts removable media in an arrangement where the media are well-catalogued and accessible, or possibly a removable drive.
