So many corrupted or write-locked flash cards

There are so many posts about a flash card that is either write-locked or corrupted and not formatable.

Does anyone have enough experience with them to weigh in on why this might be? Some ideas that occur to me are
Lousy quality.
Cameras, PC card readers, and other devices are not truly interoperable; if you keep a card on one device, it will work fine forever.
They are mishandled more often than hard drives are.
Sony is breeding SD gremlins and loosing them on the world so that more people will use Memory Stick.
There are just so manyof them that a small failure rate results in a large number of failures.

Your input is welcome, and probably better-informed than mine.
