Personally, I hate "automatic" installation and always choose custom install so that I can see what all my options are. I'd at the very least like to be able to choose the install directory.

What does a "computer mechanic" do ?

Not install programs it seems.

Find out what command line options those programs have, put those options into a batch file to run. You can also create custom setups for programs to automate their setup using various "Packagers" like this one http://msi-package-builder-professional.soft32.com/, or something similar. I used to use Wise, but seems Symantec killed that product.
