I3 540 safe 3.8 Ghz overclock settings

I'm running a stock cooler, and I currently have it clocked at 3.45 Ghz at 24/7. So I'm wondering whether if i could push it further and run it at around 3.8 to 4 Ghz, and what's the best setting to do so.

just test your OC in 3.8Ghz with P95 8 hours, alway's keep eye at temperature , maximal temperature fulload test stress 70C .. if your temp above 70 and up up drop your OC.
and if your temp still low under stres test you can up overclock again .. up up up untill max.

An aftermarket cooler is a good idea. It will let your cpu run cooler,quieter, and let you OC higher.
It need not be expensive $30 will get you a Xigmatek Gaia.

As to safety, so long as you do not fiddle with the voltages, you should be safe. Then if your cpu gets too hot, it will just downclock or shut down.
